Dogs who run in the Iditarod, are Alaskan huskies.
They pull dogsleds. They cannot be considered an AKC breed because they have a mixture of dogs in them. Elements in this breed are considered to be Siberian huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Salukies, Pointers, etc These dogs are born to run. The dogs are connected via harnesses to what is called a gang line. The gang line is connected to the sled which holds all of the food, and of course the musher. The Iditarod is a race where these dogs and musher run for 1049 miles. The race takes about a week and a half for the first musher and dogs to pass into Nome,AK. The race starts in Anchorage, AK. For more information go to ; Iditarod.com .
Many people consider this to be cruel and harsh, but the dogs love to run. They are bred to do it, and are not beaten or whipped into doing so.
